A national voice for seniors housing
Seniors Housing Canada (SHC) is a national, non-partisan alliance of the organisations that build, operate, finance and support housing for older Canadians. We exist because the people who make seniors housing work — non-profit and co-operative providers, private operators, developers, Indigenous housing bodies, municipalities, suppliers and researchers — have never had one table to sit at together.
Canada is home to more than 8.1 million people aged 65 and older, and Statistics Canada projects that share will keep rising for the next five decades. Housing that is affordable, accessible and connected to care is the single biggest determinant of whether those years are lived with dignity. SHC works to make that housing the norm rather than the exception.
Our mission
To expand the supply, quality and affordability of seniors housing in Canada by uniting the sector, informing public policy and equipping providers with the knowledge and tools to succeed.
Our vision
A Canada where every older person has a safe, affordable home in a community of their choosing, with the supports they need to live well.
Our values
Dignity first. Older Canadians are people with histories, preferences and rights, not units of demand.
Evidence over anecdote. We advocate from data, and we publish what we learn.
One sector, many models. Non-profit, co-operative, private, Indigenous-led and public providers all belong here.
Partnership with government. Policy improves fastest when the people who deliver housing help design it.
Openness. Our research, terminology and guides are free wherever we can make them so.
What we do
Advocate to federal, provincial and territorial governments for policy and funding that grows affordable seniors housing supply.
Publish national research, data and a common terminology for the sector.
Deliver professional certification and education, including the Certified Seniors Housing Professional (CSHP) designation.
Convene operators, builders, funders and policymakers through events, committees and a member community.
Help seniors and families understand their housing options.
